Before reading this article, we would like you to first ask yourselves the below questions:
1. Does it take you a long time to fall asleep?
2. Are you always feel not sleepy at all even if it’s already 12 pm?
3. Do you feel tired and weary in the morning?

If your answers are all yeses, then you probably have insomnia. You’re not alone, according to the latest China’s Sleep Index Report, 31.2% of adult Chinese suffer from symptoms of insomnia, 60% of the elderly have trouble sleeping and over 70% of the working people lack of sleep due to insomnia.

People may think it’s not a serious problem having trouble sleeping. You did not get enough sleep at night but you can still pull it though the next day or you can catch a nap when have time. As a matter of fact, having trouble sleeping harm you in many ways.

Insomnia causes black eyes, big eye bags, loose skin and dim complexion. These are what you can see the next morning. Long term lacking of sleep leads to slow thinking, poor alertness and judgement, weakened immunity and endocrine disorder. Severe insomnia may cause Alzheimer, amnesia, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. For children, lack of sleep influences their concentration on class, resulting to poor performance.

The reasons for insomnia are not only psychological but physical. Do you know that there is a hormone in human body that is called melatonin, which is an amine hormone secreted by pineal body in human beings and other mammals? Secretion of melatonin normally starts at 8 pm, reaches peak at 2 to 3 am and starts decreasing till 8 am. The secretion corresponds with people’s work and rest timetable and influences strongly your sleeping time.

There are quite a few health care products containing melatonin on the market. To take too much melatonin however decreases concentration of human body’s thyroxine and causes drooping spirit and weariness. Doctors would usually suggest people to obtain melatonin from food instead of medicine. This verifies that old saying in China: Food cures better than medicine.
